How the Port of Rotterdam is using new technologies to improve operations

Being one of the busiest, biggest ports and a gateway to Europe, the Port of Rotterdam is generally recognized for its use of digital twin technology and smart port innovations. Through the use of digital twin technology, the port creates a virtual representation of its operations. It is acquiring data from sensors, vessels, weather systems, and logistics networks enabling operators to simulate scenarios, predict congestion, and optimize resource allocation. It is also known that the Port of Rotterdam has placed a great number of IoT sensors throughout the port to observe water levels, weather conditions, and berth occupancy. For ships, this offers to receive optimized arrival times, reducing waiting times and fuel consumption.
