Driving Sustainable Trade: DP World Joins Forces with Green Marine and Sets Bold Carbon Goals

In this globalized world, where everything is connected, there is a need for sustainability to ensure mankind’s survival, economic expansion, and if possible, society’s social wellbeing.

In industries like logistics and maritime trade, where business activities accrue environmental fatigue, implementing sustainability efforts are paramount for averting the climate crisis, and protecting nature and natural resources for the next generations. In other words, by embracing sustainability, companies can have a lower carbon footprint, enhanced resource usage, and foster innovation. In particular, more innovation is a sought-after trend considering increasing requests by consumers, regulators and investors. Additionally, practicing sustainable practices also improves operational margins, decreases the costs of environmental destruction and enhances brand images, thus making it a key requirement in this world of seeking a green economy.

DP World has further shown its drive towards sustainability by adding Vancouver, Nanaimo, and Saint John in Trinidad to the Green Marine environmental program.

In the logistics and the shipping sector, sustainability is a rising priority. As world trade greatly affects the reductions in carbon emissions besides the increase in pollution, shipping is a clear area of focus for sustainability efforts. DP World, by associating with Green Marine, has identified the reduction in emissions, prevention of spills, waste management, and nurturing community engagement issues as having been successfully achieved in connection with Green Marine’s 14 very strict performance measures. Green Marine’s transparency can be attributed to annual public disclosures and the bi-annual verification of results by independent bodies.

Doug Smith, DP World Canada CEO, stressed the need for environmental practices to become the backbone of DP World’s operations as an overall reflection of the company’s mission to promote sustainable trade. He stated that Green Marine is a partner that helps promote sustainability and gives the company the opportunities needed to tactically deal with sustainability projects they have. David Bolduc, President and CEO of the Green Marine Corporation, complimented DP World on their commitment to environmental leadership, wishing other companies will do the same.

DP World has put forward ambitious carbon offset goals which were validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Among the mentioned targets is a 42% reduction in Scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions, a 62.2% reduction in Scope 2, and a 28% reduction in Scope 3 by the year 2030 on a 2022 baseline. These activities point to the significance sustainability plays in a well-maintained and green global supply chain, which is a key pillar for a resilient world.

In the meantime, Green Marine is working with the ESG-focused digital platform RightShip, a catalyst that has the shipping industry cooperating in implementing sustainability measures. Through the inclusion of Green Machine’s certification in the platform, RightShip seeks to incite, and affect increased environmental responsibility from shipowners, charterers, and other stakeholders and thus better global trade’s green credentials.
