Handling Cargo for Open Top and Flat Rack Containers: What to Know

There are limited ways to load your cargo to a container if it is oversized, which means it is not possible to load it to a regular container. However, it means not only does the type of container change, but it also means that the methods of stuffing and stripping will change, too.

1. Open Top Container Loading

As a definition, this method is for a 20-foot or 40-foot open-top container. It can be completely open or with a tarpaulin. It can be loaded from the top with a crane or forklift.

Loading Steps:

  • Planning: Weight distribution must be even. The load height may exceed the container height, but prior approval must be obtained from the carrier.
  • Top Loading: This is done with a crane, or gantry crane.
  • Securing: It must be secured to the base or corner points with lashing.
  • Tarping (Optional): Covered with a tarpaulin; the tarpaulin’s support beams must not come into contact with the load. Tarping may be required for customs or maritime transport requirements.

Applications: Tall but narrow loads such as machinery, engines, generators and construction equipment.

2. Flat Rack Container Loading

As a definition, a platform container without side walls or a top. It can be 20 feet or 40 feet tall. It can be folded or have a fixed top.

Loading Steps:

  • Preparation: The container floor is leveled with a forklift. It is usually loaded on the ground and then lifted onto the trailer by crane.
  • Side or Top Loading: It is placed directly on the ground by crane. A forklift can be used (for lighter loads).
  • Lashing and Chocking: The load is secured with steel rope, chain, or wooden blocks. The flat racks all have lashing rings at the corners.
  • Weight and Dimension Approval: The carrier may request special permission based on the size and weight of the load. If the load extends beyond the container, it is considered “oversized”.

Areas of Use: Transformers, windmill parts, large machinery, heavy metal structures, etc.

Important Things to Follow While Loading Oversize Cargoes

Below are a few tips to ensure successful loading:

  • Detailed photos must be taken before and after the loading.
  • Documents must be arranged correctly from the beginning.
  • Cargo must be loaded evenly to prevent the risk of sideways shifting or tipping.
  • NBC inspection is highly recommended to ensure the seaworthiness of the cargo.

When everything is done correctly, it is as simple as loading a regular container.
