The fourth and final quarter of 2026 has arrived and that means shipping carriers are transitioning into holiday mode ahead of what’s expected to be another busy holiday shopping season over the next few months. USPS is one of the shipping carriers used by many small to medium-sized businesses, and as expected, they are temporarily raising rates for the holiday season.
U.S. Postal Service (USPS) Price Increases for the 2026 Holiday Season
The U.S. Postal Service announced seasonal price increases ahead of the holiday season back in August, and those higher rates are going into effect on October 4th, two days from now. The rates will stay in place until January 17, 2027.
As is typically the case, the higher rates are temporarily put in place to offset higher handling costs to match demand, associated transportation costs, as well as other factors such as fuel costs. The USPS will be employing additional employees during the peak holiday season, so these workers will bring extra payroll and other operating costs as well.
The following retail services will be affected with the following price increases, per USPS:
- Priority Mail and USPS Ground Advantage (Zones 1-4): rates will increase from as low as $0.50 for packages up to 3 pounds to as high as $3.90 for packages up to 70 pounds, as well as oversized packages.
- Priority Mail and USPS Ground Advantage (Zones 5-9): rates will increase from as low as $1.00 for packages up to 3 pounds to as high as $9.10 for packages up to 70 pounds, as well as oversized packages.
- Priority Mail Flat Rate (All Zones): the popular flat rate shipping options will see increases of $2.10 for large flat rate packages, while smaller packages will see a $1.00 increase.
- Ground Advantage (Zones 5-9): another popular option for businesses of all sizes, the USPS Ground Advantage service will see rates increase by as low as $0.75 for packages up to 3 pounds, and as high as $7.50 for packages up to 70 pounds, as well as oversized packages.
- Priority Mail Express (Zones 1-9): when packages need to arrive quicker, companies that use the Priority Mail Express service will see rates increase by as low as $1.40 for packages up to 3 pounds, and as high as $20.80 for packages up to 70 pounds.
- Priority Mail Express Flat Rate (All Zones): this express service will see flat rate envelopes increase by $2.35 across-the-board.
On the commercial side, both the Priority Mail and Ground Advantage services will see rate increases by pound and cubic size tiers starting as low as $0.40 and going as high as $18.20 for longer shipping distances. A full breakdown of prices for both retail and commercial rates is available on the USPS website.
Challenges facing the USPS amid higher fuel and labor costs and other factors
The USPS has faced financial difficulties for many years. In recent years, many of the global shipping and supply chain issues we have reported on have affected the USPS, too.
Higher labor costs were already straining the USPS, and now, higher fuel costs have added to the mix. Small to medium-sized shippers who fulfill their own orders whether via their own e-commerce website or marketplace platforms such as Amazon, Etsy, etc. are noticing higher shipping costs. However, other carriers such as FedEx and UPS have also had to raise rates, so the USPS has managed to remain competitive with this year’s holiday rate increases, as well as the overall price increases it announced last year.
One other challenge for the USPS is its long-standing partnership with e-commerce giant Amazon. Earlier this year, the USPS faced the possibility of Amazon not using the USPS to fulfill many of its orders. However, a contract was agreed-upon, and the worst did not come to pass. That could change in the future.
