Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) recently reached another key milestone, extending its advantage over competitors. The achievement comes on the heels of a hot shipping market, particularly for secondhand and charter vessels.
MSC has surged past the six million TEU milestone with its latest figures.
According to the most recent Alphaliner Top 100 league table, MSC has surpassed the six million TEU milestone. This milestone marks a historic first. Strong shipping market growth has propelled the growth. Over the past year, the segment saw a significant capacity increase of 2.85 million TEUs, a 10.6% rise.
MSC has strong carrying capacity, with 844 total ships. During the height of the post-Covid supply chain crisis in 2022, the shipping giant was chartering many vessels as capacity was severely disrupted and limited. A reversal from this situation has helped the carrier reach new heights of shipment activity and record-high TEUs.
As previously mentioned, secondhand ships are a high market that MSC has taken advantage of this year to grow its fleet and increase capacity. Data from Alphaliner shows that 141 vessels changed hands this year, so far. That’s higher than normal and driving this active secondhand market, potentially due to supply chain disruptions regarding the Red Sea Crisis.
