Today is World Oceans Day, a day that is really special for the world and means so much to MTS Logistics. As a company, we are dedicated to building a better world. Whether it is through promoting autism awareness or helping our employees stay healthy by paying for their gym memberships in full, we care about our planet.

Cleaning up the world’s oceans and keeping them safe for all species is very important to us. We are in a business that sees many goods transported via the oceans. Over time, we have watched as our industry has adapted to greener shipping practices. Even so, we can always do more to help keep the marine environment safe for all fish and wildlife that live in them or on nearly beaches. This cause was so near and dear to MTS Logistics that, last year, we held our first-ever Oceans Cleanup project to help clean up beaches in both New York and Turkey.

Today, we would like to bring awareness to all of the problems plaguing our oceans and provide three simple solutions to help make a difference. If we did it, as an organization, so can you.

We need to recognize the magnitude of the situation: the ocean is in trouble.

Each year, more than eight million metric tons of plastic enter the oceans. This amount is only going to increase as the world population further grows. The ocean plays a vital role in our planet’s ecosystem, and we need to do everything we can to keep it healthy. The good news is that there are things you can do to ensure cleaner, safer oceans for our future.

First, we can reduce the amount of plastic in the oceans.

The first step to cleaning up the oceans is to reduce the amount of plastic that is entering them. You can do this by recycling and avoiding single-use plastics. You can also help by picking up trash when you see it on the beach or in the water. Every piece of trash that you pick up makes a difference for our entire world over the longer-term.

Second, we can align ourselves to organizations working to clean up the oceans.

You can also support organizations that are working to clean up the oceans. There are many groups out there doing great work to remove trash from the water and raise awareness about ocean conservation. Find one that aligns with your values and consider making a donation.

Third, we can embrace more sustainable lifestyles, such as with seafood.

Another way you can help keep our world’s oceans clean is by eating sustainable seafood. Sustainable seafood is caught or farmed in a way that doesn’t damage the environment. When you buy sustainable seafood, you are using your dollars towards a cleaner ocean. Sustainable seafood takes into account the habitats and levels of certain fish in the ocean to make sure we are not consuming more than is produced; it keeps supply and demand in check for a sustainable future.

We all need to do our part to protect the oceans. They are a vital part of our planet’s ecosystem and we rely on them for our survival. By taking action to reduce plastic pollution, support ocean conservation, and embracing sustainable seafood – just like MTS Logistics did – you can make a difference for our oceans.
