Samsung Heavy Industries Making Advances in Autonomous Shipping Infrastructure

Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has opened an advanced Samsung Remote Operation Center (SROC) at Evergreen’s headquarters in Taipei, marking the first collaboration between a shipbuilder and a shipping company to create such a facility.

The new center strengthens the long-standing SHI-Evergreen partnership and supports their ongoing work in smart-ship innovation, remote vessel monitoring, and the transition toward autonomous and shore-based operations.

Details of the new facility and infrastructure

The Samsung Remote Operation Center functions as a land-based control tower that provides real-time monitoring of vessel data and critical onboard equipment, enabling condition-based maintenance, remote inspections and rapid troubleshooting for Evergreen’s fleet.

Developed with Evergreen and ClassNK, the system is designed to reduce downtime, enhance operational safety and support next-generation remote and autonomous navigation. Evergreen plans to gradually expand the number of vessels connected to the center as smart-ship capabilities continue to advance. Helping both partners prepare for a future of more shore-controlled operations.

A new autonomous ship trial was a recent major milestone for automation in the industry.

Samsung Heavy Industries and Evergreen recently completed a major autonomous-navigation trial on a 15,000-TEU container ship sailing a 10,000-kilometer route from Oakland to Kaohsiung.

The vessel operated with the Samsung Autonomous Ship (SAS) system, which integrated radar, GPS and camera data to manage routing and vessel control without crew intervention. The trial also validated key smart-ship functions such as real-time automation, condition-based maintenance and video-based remote monitoring. Evergreen plans to extend the setup to more vessels as the technology matures.

Why Samsung is riding the wave of automation in shipping and logistics.

Samsung’s latest move comes as the shipping industry moves to make automation widespread. Many companies have popped up that are seeking to disrupt shipping via autonomous ships and associated infrastructure. Larger companies like Samsung have sought to capitalize on this trend, hoping to be “first to market” with major breakthroughs in autonomous technology.

Time will tell if a major, establish company wins the war for autonomous vessels and technology, or if a surprising startup will appear and catch everyone off-guard.
